The set featured a wall that backed the apartment scenes as well as when lit served as a train door, and later the fence of the encampment. In the production photos (by Veronica Bonderud Photography) the performance is Mary Jane Mosquito, summer 2021. As I live in London and the pandemic was in another peak this entire process was conducted remotely. I had fun this with this project. My process is very sketchy, which is something I’ve had to embrace and enjoy. I draw a lot and use the sketching process to work out ideas. It was a simple set, inspired by Baroque prosceniums but took several steps to figure out the logistics of achieving stability in the open air, short set up time, and compact travel. I worked with two emerging directors on their short 15 minute scenes (The Gulling of Malvolio dir. Marie Farsi and scenes from Phaedra’s Love dir. Sara Jarvie-Clark) that were presented over the course of two evenings in mid October. It was a wonderful experience, and it was very exciting to work on the Festival Theatre stage. These are not production photos, but photos of the process. The show featured five performers: Zach Stevenson as Hank, and a four piece band. A mixture of music and memoir, the play is about real-life Hank Williams’ career and premature death. I hand painted the suit we fashioned after an original suit American tailor Nudie Cohn designed for Hank Williams. The band were costumed in matching musical note detailed rose and brown suits. The show later was presented by Persephone Theatre, in the spring of 2012.
