The Glass Menagerie was “a moody and lush theatrical feast, ambitious and true to the playwright’s original vision” (Lacouvee 2014). The show was produced by Blue Bridge Repertory Theatre in February 2014, at the Roxy Theatre in Victoria B.C.
The Glass Menagerie is one of Tennessee William's memory plays. Tom, played by Victor Dolhai in our production, is the narrator and stands outside the story to show us, as the audience, his memory of the events that unfolded. He steps in and out of time, in and out of a set that we stripped down to just the bare necessities. The actors mimed most of their actions, in a dream-like rhythm, without props, save for furniture and the glass menagerie itself. The set featured a backdrop with the image of tenement housing, an image Williams references in the stage directions, and uses to illustrate the oppressively close quarters the family lives in. At times the performers were overplayed with film scenes of their own memories on a diaphanous curtain that divided the space, hung off of a mid-stage false proscenium built in the same fire escape design as the backdrop image.
The intention with this design was to evoke the same richness of detail Williams brings to his writing while considering the way in which the mind focuses on a few important details, when reliving a memory.
